Climate Change: A Crisis We Can't Ignore

Written by: Jennilee Mirtil

Let’s take a moment to reflect on something that affects us all...climate change, also known as global warming. While we often hear these terms being tossed around, the reality of what they mean for our planet is becoming more evident every day. The Earth's weather patterns are changing dramatically, leading to stronger storms, more intense wildfires, extended droughts, and a concerning rise in natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes.

It's important that we pause and truly think about where all of this is coming from. The evidence is right in front of us. We’re seeing an increase in natural disasters, and the numbers are alarming. Just look at the devastating impacts of recent hurricanes like Helene and Milton. In 2023 alone, there were 28 recorded weather and climate disasters in the U.S., according to Climate.gov. That’s more than ever before—surpassing the previous record of 22 set in 2020. Every year, the frequency and intensity of these disasters rise, and so does the cost to recover from them.

We can no longer afford to overlook what is happening. Climate change is reshaping our world. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it's increasing ocean and atmospheric temperatures, raising sea levels, and contributing to more severe weather patterns. Hurricanes, for example, are becoming more frequent, more intense, and more destructive, with stronger winds and heavier rainfall. The surge from these storms combined with higher sea levels causes flooding that devastates communities.

The truth is climate change is not a distant issue; it’s affecting us in the here and now. We need to acknowledge the severity of the situation. This is about more than just rising temperatures, it's about the safety and wellbeing of all people and the planet we call home. The time to act is now. If we don’t, we risk facing even more catastrophic consequences in the future.

But this isn't just about pointing out the problems …it's also about understanding that change is possible. We each have a role to play in addressing this crisis. Whether it's through raising awareness, making more sustainable choices, or supporting policies that protect the environment, our actions today will shape the future we leave for generations to come.

Let’s take this seriously, and let’s do it together. The challenges are great, but so is our ability to respond.  Please check out our resources at Youth Environmental Alliance to learn more and be a part of the change!
