Where Freedom First Set Sail - The Story of YEA

Three men stood at a quiet dock, watching adaptive sailboats rock gently against the water.

To anyone else, they were just boats—unused, silent, forgotten.

But to Andy, Steve, and Joel, they represented something much bigger: freedom, confidence, and the belief that every child—regardless of ability or circumstance—deserves the chance to feel capable and whole.

When the foundation they loved closed its doors, those boats were left behind. For many, that would have been the end of the story. A moment of loss. A chapter closed.

For them, it was only the beginning.

They refused to let those sails fall silent. They refused to let possibility slip beneath the surface. Instead, they chose to build something new. Something lasting. Something rooted in inclusion, discovery, and hope.

That vision became Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) in 2005.

Each founder came with a deeply personal connection to the mission. Steve, a father of a child with special needs, understood firsthand how rare true inclusion can be—and how life‑changing it is when it exists. Andy and Joel were lifelong mentors who believed what textbooks alone cannot teach: that the best learning happens outdoors, where confidence is built through teamwork, trust, fishing lines, and sails catching the wind.

Together, they didn’t just create programs.

They created experiences—ones that changed lives.

One of those lives belongs to Sanford.

Sanford is completely blind. Before discovering YEA, much of his daily life required dependence on others. But on the water, something remarkable happened. When Sanford learned to sail through YEA’s adaptive program, he experienced independence in its purest form.

Later, he put words to what so many struggle to explain:

“In my everyday life, I must rely on others. In sailing, I am completely free.”

Freedom became the heartbeat of YEA.

And that heartbeat didn’t just echo on the water. It carried far beyond.

Then there was Olivia.

She was just nine years old when she attended a YEA plastics education class. What she learned didn’t stay in the classroom. It sparked something powerful. Olivia saw the problem of plastic pollution and decided she wouldn’t wait for adults to fix it. Instead, she launched her own nonprofit—creating reusable bags and inspiring others to rethink their impact.

A lesson became action.

Curiosity became leadership.

Confidence became purpose.

What started as a single adaptive sailing program grew into a movement.

Twenty years later, YEA now offers life‑changing initiatives like Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs, Fishing for Success, and FL Ag in the Classroom—alongside more than 100 STEAM‑based environmental science classes, field trips, and outdoor learning experiences each year

Last year alone, YEA reached more than 43,000 people across five counties and multiple countries, expanding access through both hands‑on and virtual programming. Together, since 2005, YEA’s diverse students and participants have planted nearly 7,000 trees, 400,000 plants, installed more than 2,000 pollinator gardens, and contributed to over 115,000 tons of carbon offsets

But numbers only tell part of the story.

The real impact lives in moments—

When a child feels capable for the first time.

When a student discovers their voice.

When someone who once stood on the sidelines realizes they belong.

This impact exists because of people who believe in possibility.

People like you.

Your support fuels passionate educators, expands inclusive programs, and ensures that more children—more Sanfords, more Olivias—experience independence, belonging, and hope for the future.

Together, we keep the sails flying.

Together, we build futures.
